Future upgrade of ISO 14001:2026 – An overview of the new amendment

According to the latest ISO Survey 2024, nearly 1.2 million sites worldwide operate in accordance with ISO 14001. In Austria alone, almost 4,000 sites are certified to the standard.

With the consolidated amendment to ISO 14001:2026, ISO aims to maintain the proven state of the art in environmental management. This is achieved through the integration of requirements from the Harmonised Structure (HS) – such as those relating to the planning of change and audits – as well as through clarifications in wording and explanations (particularly in the Annex) regarding the concepts of environmental performance, including possible interrelationships and the impacts of environmental issues, climate change, life cycle assessment and communication.

A new feature is the general reference to the ISO 14002 series (Parts 1 to 4), which provides guidance on the use of ISO 14001 for addressing environmental aspects and conditions specific environmental topic areas such as water, climate change, etc. This also takes into account key findings from the global study "Future Challenges".

A basic understanding of ISO 14001, including its practical implementation, is required.
