PEFC RED III Certification (PEFC ST 5002: 2025)

Motivation and benefits

PEFC RED III certification is an EU-wide recognized system for players in the biomass and biogas market and offers numerous advantages:

  • Provide legally secure and transparent proof of compliance with the EU RED III Directive (2023/2413) and fulfillment of the requirements for your company.
  • Gain access to the EU electricity and heat markets with PEFC RED III certification.
  • Use PEFC RED III certification to claim subsidies, such as the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
  • Increase transparency through independent audits in your company and the upstream supply chain and identify potential for improvement.
  • PEFC RED III certification helps you to drive the green transformation and achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal by promoting sustainable practices in your company and demonstrating compliance with environmentally friendly standards.
  • PEFC is known as a forest certification, is practicable, the existing COC certificate can be easily extended and is particularly suitable for the procurement of biomass in private forests.
Objectives

Climate protection through sustainable bioenergy

Climate change - driven by greenhouse gas emissions from industry and unsustainable land use - is increasingly influencing political and economic decisions. To counteract this, the EU has created clear guidelines for the sustainable use of biomass with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III, 2023/2413).

The PEFC RED III system is a voluntary certification system recognized by the EU and national authorities. Developed by PEFC International, it ensures that bioenergy from domestic forests is produced and used sustainably. The PEFC RED III certification of your company confirms compliance with the sustainability criteria according to Article 29 of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and enables the disclosure of relevant data on greenhouse gas savings along the entire supply chain.
