ISO 45001 as follow-up standard
OHSAS 18001 will be adopted at the end of September 2021
At the end of September 2021, ISO 45001 will replace the first globally recognized British standard for occupational safety – BS OHSAS 18001. Eckehard Bauer, MSc, Executive Vice President Business Development Safety Management, Business Continuity, Risk, Security, Compliance and Transport has briefly summarized what you should be aware of now and which advantages ISO 45001 has.
BS OHSAS 18001 has influenced systematic occupational safety for more than 20 years and at the same time has done great pioneering work in terms of standardization. The standard served as a globally recognized standard for occupational health and safety. The standard will now be finally adopted on September 30th, 2021, the transition period was extended by half a year at the turn of the year due to COVID-19.
Since 2018, ISO 45001 has been the legitimate successor to OHSAS 18001, defined by the "IAF Mandatory Document 21". Due to the increased prevention concept, ISO 45001 is a modern management system for occupational health and safety. The focus is even more or “systematically” on employees and their reactions, as the idea of a “systematic” risk analysis (workplace evaluation) and the staking out and awareness of the elements of danger is deeply anchored.
Easy integration into existing management systems
ISO 45001 has been given the same structure (High Level Structure) and terminology as other relevant standards, such as quality management (ISO 9001) or environmental management (ISO 14001). As a result, the standards are also readily compatible with existing integrated management systems, thus giving companies more scope for flexibility in standards implementation.
